I loved Heroes of Might & Magic, but I could never get into Master of Magic and any of its clones.
I think part of the problem is the strategies behind the strategic portion are so damn obtuse. Fuck if I could ever tell what build order or spell research was better than the others in Fallen Enchantress or Warlock. I don't think tactical combat has ever worked with a complex 4x economy. Master of Orion 1 and HoMM kept the economy bare bones and the tech progression was plainly spelled out. Civ had a meaty strategic development portion but the combat was heavily abstracted. It just feels like a mess whenever they try to do both.
Eador is the worse offender though. The castle building screen is a goddamn cluttered mess (both Genesis and Broken World).
There were other nagging things that killed it for me. Mages seem by far the best hero. Units don't stack like HoMM so the fast burn factor is never a limitation; most of the enemy army is dead after you've used up your unlimited range damage spells. The game also seems to think stamina is an important stat since half the upgrade options are about improving it, but it's never been a factor in any battles, even when I wasn't a mage and slogged it out with a commander hero.
