In this day and age (or really, any day and age), there is no reason to spend $30 on a roguelike, especially when over 700 of them can be had for free here.
However, if you had cash to burn and loved the genre, you owe it to yourself to check out Cogmind, which pushes ASCII-ish to its very limits, while offering a fresh take on the genre, as you are a robot who goes through the "caves" affixing new parts to yourself as you go, building power all the way.
It's still in "alpha", but as someone I don't remember pointed out, even Nethack is still in alpha, always evolving, always moving forward, never finish. Cogmind is such a beast, already a full, wonderful game, and well worth your time if you can afford it.
