Norm Macdonald only cares about things that have to be in people's minds but for one reason or another aren't coming out of their mouths. The "Chairman of the Bored" thing is exactly the joke a little kid makes. It's a pun and it's right there in the title. He knows people aren't worried about the crack epidemic, they just love saying "crack whore" - a word about as threatening as the name of a Hannah-Barbera character.
He basically only thinks about those things and then his act is about using this to get laughs, but without a lot of embellishing. I don't know if you watched Weekend Update but he only had one joke per controversy - OJ is a murderer, Michael Jackson is a pedophile - and the punch line was just about reiterating that in a new way. For example - a report on Michael Jackson putting up posters of Shirley Temple in his hospital room. The joke: "Now we should remind you that Jackson is a homosexual pedophlie." End of joke. At the ESPYs he told a Heisman winner that "No one can take that away from you, unless you kill your wife and a waiter, in which case all bets are off." One Update joke cut after rehearsal was him saying "In other news, Woody Allen is dating again" over the photo of the Vietnam girl burned by napalm. I don't believe this was apropos of anything actually happening in the news.
This probably isn't his best joke but it's my favorite: "This week, the FDA gave final approval to a device that prevents heart attacks by blasting the heart with a powerful jolt of electricity. If the device works properly, you will not have a heart attack. If it doesn't work properly, you will have a giant heart attack." |
