Each spell takes 1 or 2 AP to cast and lasts a number of turns. So we could just go the completely ridiculous way of out of combat spells having no cost and their turn count only starting at the beginning of the next combat encounter. This would be really fucking ridiculous because you could haste everyone, armor everyone, pop all self cooldowns, and just start every combat encounter with such an overwhelming advantage that they'd just need to let enemies do the same thing, which would ultimately just be a push.
Spells could tick down while out of combat. I feel like this would just be confusing and unfun. What would be the AP to second ratio? If spell duration ticks down then AP probably would have to recover at the same rate, ultimately you'd just be left in the same situation you are now.
There's just zero way to reconcile it, prebuffing would have to have a similar cost to incombat buffing or it'd just be overpowered, and you'd end up in the same dumb ass position as Baldur's Gate 2, giving each enemy NPC a ton of buffs active on them at the start of the fight to 'balance' things. |
