| In fact back in those days making the game heavily reliant on the manual was a soft anti-piracy feature. Have you forgotten already?
But for my money, forget Wizardry. The REAL gems of classic WRPG design are the SSI Gold Box games. Combining the first person grid-based dungeon crawling of Wizardry/Might and Magic with the isometric tactical RPG combat that would years later turn Final Fantasy Tactics into a classic. To this day one of the greatest joys of my RPG gaming youth was sending a well-aimed fireball into a packed group of enemies and watching the "Bleh!" skull death animation play out meticulously over, and over, and over again. GOG has (most of) them in these two compilations: Here and here! (They also made some in the Buck Rogers and Spelljammer settings, maybe gog couldn't get the rights, or maybe they're waiting for a slow week.) What's more, SSI made a development engine for Gold Box called "Unlimited Adventures" (included in the first pack) and there's a huge collection of fan-made modules still being added to today! (Holy shit, is that a total conversion of the Castle Ravenloft canned adventure?) |
