In 2000, I thought Al Gore was a big phony. It seemed his campaign could say nothing good about him and all they did was tell horror stories about a potential George Bush jr. presidency. So I decided I wasn't going to vote out of fear/was going to send a message/all the rest, and voted for Ralph Nader.
My choice did not have the intended effect. Not only did George Bush jr. prove to be significantly worse than an additional four years of Bill Clinton, the Democratic party failed to receive any message from the Nader votes, despite being enough to flip Florida. In fact, a few months after the presidential election I went to a local Dem meeting to help a friend in the local elections, and the big message being trumpeted by the Dem muckity mucks was that the country had shifted to the right and the Dems better follow suit.
So please explain to me why the situation today is different than in 2000? What are the benefits you expect from this course of action that failed to materialize in 2000? And most importantly, how will a continuing senator Bernie Sanders benefit as he attempts to pass progressive legislation past Donald Trump's veto stamp? |
