Unless I'm completely misreading it, it's one of the most ridiculous parodies of Western action movies possibly ever. Everything is so grandiose and over the top right out of the gate, and it just keeps trying to top itself all the way through. It's pure nonsense to the point you could probably make a case for it being spite for Western audiences, and it's great. I checked out a few reviews and people complained about the plot being convoluted, but the plot is only a flimsy vehicle for putting you in comically absurd action sequences. People called it "unintentionally" funny, and I think that's bullshit! I think it's completely intentional. For Christ's sake, one campaign ends with you rocketing out of a subterranean elevator shaft, barely hanging on to an elevator car for dear life as a lava surge gushes up behind you, and your characters decide to share a Moment about how much they really care for and appreciate each other, there's a close-up of them reaching over to hold hands, then a cheesy rock ballad starts blaring, and the credits roll. No explanation of how you ultimately escape at all. Tell me this game is not intentionally funny.
My only big complaints are that they ditched the weapon upgrade system and replaced it with a lame skill upgrade system. Given the structure of the game I can understand why they couldn't do weapon upgrades, but it's still worse. Also, the pace of the game is relentless to the point that it does start to get exhausting at times. The only other thing people might not like is it ditches horror and is pure action, other than you fighting grotesque monsters.
This game is totally underrated and worth the $5 or $10 or whatever you'll find it at in a sale. |
