That post got me thinking about this show, how it still leaves me mildly pissed how bad it got.
SO SPOILERS!!
It really was pretty good, at first. I think a good number of writers in the room were always just bad writers adding to the mix, but it all made sense at least and they tried some fun visual metaphors here and there, rare for the time in TV. A lot of people hated when Dexter gets the English girlfriend, but I kinda liked some of the cinematography that season. Dexter meets this fun girl who gives him an actual boner for the first time in his life, but he eventually, o well sure enough, has to kill her because she's not fun-crazy but crazy-crazy. The fan reaction at the time was strange. Women hated this chick universally, I guess the other-woman thing. But poor Dexter, back to faking boners with Rita and killing people, in the end. Y'know, it's never really resolved properly either, they just find him a new girlfriend and then because they can't think of anything else... kill Rita. Which is avoiding dealing with the conflict inside Dexter. Eh, bad writing. The season with Lithgow was fun, pretty scary performance. The season starts with Lithgow, nude. And it's creepy as fuck. The next season they get the new showrunner and everything went to hell.
The problem with Dexter was just no conflict. He's got this man in his head, his father preaching the code, Jimmy the Cricket. I want to see Dexter reach the point he has to stomp and crush Jimmy the Cricket. It's all just boring having thanksgiving dinner with ghost-dad in the living room.
The show reached this rut, every season Dexter deals with a big-bad. If I had been made showrunner instead of Scott Buck, I'd've introduced the typical big-bad. Then I'd have gone through all the old episodes and found every one of Dexter's slip-ups over the years, and they all come back to trap him. The big bad and his cronies aren't defeated, but join up with Dexter as the new cast and we leave the old cast either dead or simply out of the show--maybe his sister could live and stick around somehow. Now his father wants to kill him and his inner-monologues get crazier. Hey, the shows gonna change with a new showrunner anyway. But nothing like that happens--O SHIT, I can't spoil any further, I need a fucking safe space or something just thinking about thinking how bad it gets.
Yeah after two seasons it's probably enough fucking Dexter. |
