I've tried throwing baking powder down all over the floor but it didn't work.

I've never heard of baking powder as a means to drive off or kill ants. The two things I understand are effective are boric acid and powdered chalk. You can use powdered chalk - available at hardware or construction supply stores - as a means to keep ants from crossing into an area. Boric acid is supposed to be useful in killing ants although it's most famous as a roach killer.

The chalk apparently is unpleasant to the ants so they avoid crossing it.

Boric acid acts like breathing in shards of glass.

When using boric acid for killing, you want to spread it out as a dust, say by turning the bottle upside down, standing up, then upside down to shake it up and creating stirred up particles in the bottle, then squeezing it as a bellows, aiming at the floor of the desired area to be treated so it falls like a light snow. If boric acid is "poured" down like in teaspoon quantities then it is treated by insects the way people treat large plowed-up snow banks: they avoid it and go around.

Also, both have to be replenished as they get dirty, contaminated or wear off, or if they are washed away or get wet.
