Re: But if you buy it you can pay $32 extra for John Wick! by Ice Cream Jonsey 11/05/2017, 11:51am PST
My anger towards the Steam Link is pretty similar to John Wick's anger to losing his dog.

I can't get over how bad the UX is for the thing when it's on a television. There should have been some commandments when they started the project. Easy for me to say, but:

1) We can't tie up or otherwise lock the source computer when the Steam Link is in use. People are going to want to let their shitty kids play Lego Universe on the TV downstairs while they are upstairs doing whatever. If we can't solve this (they couldn't) we don't have a product.

2) Everything needs to work with the Steam gamepad. Or else the game just shouldn't even come up. "This means," says a guy starting at Valve on his first say, "That we will have to work with developers for coverage here and we can't rely on the community to do our work for u--" at this point, he is laughed at so hard he shifts into a mirror universe and gets a sabre through the heart by Sulu.

3) We have to have protections against the Steam Link losing connection with the source PC. We can't have it freeze up to the point where the gamer has to set his controller down, run to wherever the PC is, fuck around with it, go back over to the TV and Steam Link to see if it's working now, realize that it's not, go back up, fuck around with it more, decide it's not worth the trouble and give up. We have to be better than someone running a long-ass HDMI cord through their home.

4) We need to do a better job with tagging, genres, labels or whatever than Steam on the desktop is because people don't want to sit there and scroll through games to find one because nobody wants to type in title names with a gamepad. Now I am just making stuff up that will never happen, because you still can't search your own library based on genre unless you tag shit yourself, so whatever.

And it sucks because they got so much right. It's the sort of thing that works great until it doesn't and then it's just easier to turn on Netflix.
