The only difference is, I'd give my Also Kinda Good? award to the X-Men babies episode, which felt like a nice throwback to all those classic middle-of-the-road monsters of the week, the ones that always seemed to resolve with some poor jerk getting paranormally murdered in a locked office while our protagonists jiggled the doorknob from the outside. Was the Philadelphia Trashman episode inspired by Frank's wrestling persona from Sunny, or were they both based on a real urban legend? Either way, that one went off the rails for me the minute they mentioned William, and stayed off the rails for what felt like the next hundred minutes Mulder and Scully spent processing their grief for a character nobody cared about in the first place. Here's how they should've dealt with William: "Hey Scully, remember when you had a baby?" "Yeah, what was I thinking."
The Chris Carter episodes were medical grade nostalgia poison. I think I violently expelled half my happy X-Files memories in one shot when Annabeth Gish showed up like the Five Nights at Freddy's monster I forgot I was supposed to be watching out for. Really the only news that could get me stoked for more X-Files at this point would be Chris producing posthumously.
I remembered that trashman was a throwback to the middling monster of the week episodes (especially the first season's), but couldn't remember why it felt like some part of it was awful. I had totally blanked out Scully's mother in the hospital taking up half the episode.
I knew some die hard fans at the time (knew every episode name from memory) and even they unanimously did not give a fuck about William. Learning that cigarette smoking man was still alive got objects hurled at the TV.
Worst non-mythology episode: Surely it can't be so obviously that those Arabs were actually terrorists who blew the building up? Nope, they were! Dream solves everything! Saturday Night Mulder montage! Look at these bigot Texans and DoHS officials assuming that all Arabs are terrorists! Turns out all the Arabs WERE terrorists! |
