Received a resume from some woman who had been building websites via contracting for the last 10 years. Held 3 degrees: biology, fine arts, writing. Had never held a single job related to: biology, fine arts, writing. What? PASS.
Speaking as someone who has both a Bachelors and a Master's in music, this sounds like a person who decided she wanted to work at a job and get paid money for that job, like I did and do. I don't see why it should be disqualifying. If anything what this says is:
- This is a person who is likely better at communicating with and understanding humans than an average engineer.
- This is a person who can teach themselves technical skills and stay relevant in the industry without formal technical training.
Seems like she was worth a phone screen to me.
Selecting resumes solely based on tech stacks is a mistake, as I guess you are starting to see. The good developers I work with a perfectly capable of jumping from stack to stack with little trouble. The great developers I work with are great because of their people skills. |
