I think there's a point where I have to accept I don't really like Souls style games a lot. I feel like it's just like someone designed Megaman to be played with save states. Those old 'hardcore' games like Ninja Gaiden had the decency to bounce your ass when you weren't getting it, which is fine but Souls games can't do that because the proper strategy is to just Zerg things and maybe you get how the game wants to be played through your thick fucking skull and maybe not.

The Surge has a few things to up difficulty: enemies will become stagger immune if you're staggering them too much, you don't level as much as you socket health/stamina upgrades so your character doesn't improve a shitload, your scrap(souls) disappear if you take too long to get back to them as well. Though it's generally pretty balanced there's a bit of bullshit but nothing as bad as those Anor Londo archers. The problem with the socket system is you'll just have to devote everything to health/flasks at a point even though there is various customization you could do instead.

I got a good 30 hours out of it, I'm skipping NG+ because it starts with base enemies just hitting as hard as the final bosses.
