I mean I guess the real question is do roleplaying games count? by Worm 07/10/2018, 11:49am PDT I'm really not that studied on this issue but pretty much every game I can think of is an RPG. Is the problem that someone can choose to be straight that removes the impact of it? Dragon Age Inquisition has a pretty excellent scenario with the gay male mage, of course his problem is supplying an heir (because no one is really homophobic in that universe) but it's handled really well. I think what's really disingenuous about this is the 'main character' and option. Ellie won't be the only playable character and she might not even be the main playable character, I wouldn't be surprised by a raiden bait and switch and we're just playing Joel anyway. Further I think the value of LGBT representation in the zombie apocalypse probably doesn't have much real world value. I'm almost certain the story will involve her partner getting rape-murdered and her going on the path of revenge. Maybe they'll actually write something interesting, but I fucking doubt it. We can make the argument that this is the first gay protagonist because in RPGs you're just choosing your characters sexuality, so it's almost like saying Deus Ex is a game with a black protagonist, it's not accurate. You COULD be black JC but gross albino JC was the one everyone picked. The biggest fact about TLOU is that it's a spiritual successor to Manhunt more than anything, it's not a game about family or redemption, it's just about killing. I'm sure that will weigh down whatever point they pretend they're trying to make.
