5 Mini-reviews for Jonesy to create a Peterson sub-forum by Rey Mysterio Jr. 07/11/2018, 8:18pm PDT
Or move them all to fuckin' Gamergate, I don't care.

1. Battletech - A great story hampered by all the combat you have to struggle through. This game is a slog. I don't mean it's dull, but the number of rando battles you have to fight to get the nice toys you want is ridiculous because of the RNG. Patch 1.1 rebalanced some stuff around and fixed most of the problems so this is as good as it's going to get. I still haven't beat it because I want 3 Assault-class mechs before I stop after the campaign's over and I only have 2. FUCKING RNG! I also feel like considering how much cash they got thrown at them to do this game the end product was still very under-ambitious. It's text and still-picture dialogue cutscenes, I don't think 3 or 5 more campaign missions would have broken the bank, guys.

2. Final Fantasy 15 - A game that came out in twice the number of years it should have taken. This is what japanese developers took away from The Witcher 3. The story here could probably be told in 3 hours - and while that's an improvement over FF13 which is a movie and not really a game, I think they could have padded it out a bit more. So many details are just assumed you know with zero exposition even when they could really benefit from it. The main thing that reminds me of Witcher 3 are the monster hunts you undertake, but unlike them there's no soul in these. In Witcher 3 there was a story behind why there was a ghost behind Bob's shed -- and it likely was because, PLOT TWIST!, he or his mistress killed her and she's a little bit bitter about the whole thing! In FF15 it's just "walk 1000 feet outside of town, kill a Gryphon, and come back for your garbage pay". Anything that's not related to the main plot of the princess roadtrip has almost zero dialogue related to it unlike Witcher where everybody would grouse about Imperials or fuckin' tax collectors and shit while they were haggling with you whether 250 gold was too much to kill the werewolf that threatened to skullfuck his entire family at night.

It's not the worst Final Fantasy game ever but the storyline is a greatest hits of FF6, 10, and 12 put in a blender.

3. Persona 5 - Still the best "traditional" JRPG and the most accessible yet. Fun for all the family. Jonesy you will appreciate the Save Anywhere feature that your phone now has! No more having to sit through 3 hours of dialogue just to get to a point where you can save! I thought a lot of the villains were pretty good in this -- more realistic, like Chris Nolan's Persona.

Just don't forget to...

4. Fortnite - Picked it up. Played 2 weeks. Read some strategy guides. Everything but shotguns are worthless due to aim reticle jitter and the standard operating procedure seems to be "1. See enemy 2. Throw up as many walls as possible between you and enemy 3. Shoot them with shotgun when they get close". I really don't get the appeal. If this is where video games are headed we are fucked and I should take up a new hobby like scrimshaw.

5. Frostpunk - The best city builder to come out in a dead genre in awhile. Graphically it's superb but what I really enjoy is that it ends at some point. This is a scenario based game, not a city-gardening game where you set things down then modify and tweak. You'll need some build orders to start out with to get out of your first 30 days without being lynched by your own people but even then you can get thrown some pretty brutal curveballs. The "morality system" is a joke and I think detracts from whatever point they were trying to make about how a survival scenario can turn you into a real bastard -- whoever wrote this stuff should get a raise. Replayability is a problem obviously but the developers have been promising more scenarios to be released for free.
