Fortnite and PUBG (is Fornite on Steam in some form? I dunno) can tell Valve to eat a dick and it means something. The garage coders are all on their own, Valve wouldn't care about any individual one.
Of course, the climate in the country at the moment means they will never get together. If you somehow got the top 30% of indie devs together to work as one united bloc, the first thing that is going to happen is that some crybaby will want a Code of Conduct, the next crybaby wants some other guy kicked out because he liked a Kthor tweet in 2012 and it all spirals into the moon from there. And a certain percentage won't join because they have an inflated sense of their own worth and would never combine forces with someone they feel superior to, this is also why unionization never goes anywhere. (Not saying that it should, but it never will.)
