Never used it myself, all secondhand knowledge. If you're working with synths, your primary concern is going to be about having a good midi sequencer. I've always used FL Studio for my farting around since the sequencer was so nice and relatively easy to pick up. Lots of people love Ableton, though that always had a bent towards live performance. I don't really know what else is out there in DAW land. Cubase was always a big one as well, but I think that was also more studio-recording oriented like Pro Tools, though with better sequencing options.
