| If I paid for this game with my own money I would be completely unfazed by what I'm about to write, but since it was a gift I can't help but feel like a cunt.
All that aside, this game is just plain unimpressive. Apparently it's been in indie development hell for years and the genres have just moved on since then. The cursor mouseaim adds nothing because this is a melee-focused game, it just unnecessarily complicates the controls. It's billed as a side-scrolling Hotline Miami, but the (nearly) unlimited bullet time robs the game of HM's frenetic pace. And unlike Bleed 2, which still requires you to air-dash your way safely between projectiles in bullet time, KZ just has an invincibility roll which takes all the skill out of the equation. And I hate the stealth sections. After playing Heat Signature and Seven, which allow you to fast forward time while waiting for a guard to turn their back, it's hard going back to just standing still in a safe spot twiddling my thumbs. The plot does indeed get in the way of the gameplay though there is an option to double the text speed. I think I can see where the plot is going and it seems to be gearing up for a disappointing ending. Don't get me wrong, the game is not bad, but it's behind the times and everything this game does well, some other indie game already does better. Here are some games I would recommend instead of Katana Zero that do a better job at its various schticks: Heat Signature (pausable stealth puzzler) Bleed 2 (Fast-paced action game with bullet-time and deflecting projectiles with a katana) Dead Cells (smoothly animated 2D platformer melee combat with invincibility rolls) (In the meantime, ICJ, I'm working on a frontpage review for Battlestar Galactica Deadlock - Season 1, I don't want your gift to seem like a waste) |
