Deep Sky Derelicts + New Prospects DLC by Mischief Maker 06/08/2019, 1:44pm PDT
It's a sci-fi roguelite/blobber RPG by the makers of Darkest Dungeon. It's practically bereft of Darkest Dungeon's aesthetics, but has better gameplay.

The first improvement over DD is your party is permanent with a lot of customization options, instead of disposable nobodies who practically all play the same. You get a basic class, then at level 4 can unlock the skill tree of a prestige class which opens an additional skill tree. Normal leveling gives enough points to unlock maybe a third of your available skills, though there are rare consumable items that give an extra skill point permanently. Two DSD characters of the same class can fill radically different roles by the game's end.

Combat uses a card system ala. Slay the Spire. Active skills from your skill tree add cards to your deck, as well as (most) equipment items. The actual damage and other effects from the cards are determined from the characters' stats. You can do things like unlock psychic powers for a character, then remove all their weapons so the only cards drawn to play in any given turn are psychic attacks. Items with less than three cards attached are worth their weight in gold.

While they're randomly generated, the titular derelicts are permanent and gameplay involves the more RPG-styled method of exploring a little bit at a time and making several return trips to the home base. Enemies repopulate over time so you can grind if you're hitting a difficulty spike. Derelicts often have NPCs within who give subquests.

But the thing is... I wish this were an expansion pack for Darkest Dungeon. Because the art and sound in this game are so dreadfully grey and boring. While on the gameplay front Slay the Spire does card combat much better, while Starcrawlers is more immersive and more spectacular in combat once the procs start flying. You can also definitely make the WRONG choice for party composition and/or skill upgrades and there's no character respec service. Even with the expansion DLC, side quests and snippets of lore get repetitive fast. It also doesn't help that the game is still pretty buggy and unpolished in areas, with unresponsive buttons from time to time.

I've been giving this game second chances to win me over all week, but ultimately I'm gonna have to give it a thumbs down because everything it does well, other games do better.
