| And since Ray already pointed out how similar battle rapping is to calling each other fags on the Internet, I'll write my review up here:
IT WAS OKAY! Saw it at the Arclight in Hollywood with the new girl. She remarked right from the start that it reminded her of "Rocky," as Eminem was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and warming up in front of a mirror. I remarked on how perceptive she was and how I would be appropriating her observation for my Caltrops.com review. She asked what Caltrops.com was, and I was busy explaining to her that it's a site I would be reviewing movies for and how cool that makes me when the people behind us kicked me in the head. They claimed I was talking too loudly, so I gave them some of the "Caltrops.Com Movei Reviews" (the spelling error is the printer's fault, but they refuse to print up a new batch claiming I wrote it that way) business cards I had made and told them it entitled them to read the reviews for FREE (you can thank me for the extra hits later). Meanwhile, the girl left. Me. Remember in the 80s all those movies in which the black guys teach the white guys how to rap and/or breakdance? Like "Breakin'" or "Revenge of the Nerds?" This the opposite of that! Now they have a white rapper who is teaching all his black friends how to rap. If that's not enough of a hook for you, there's also this: the only people who get beaten up in the movie are the white guys. One guy shoots himself, the other gets his ass kicked by a bunch of black guys. This is the Trent Lott-ization of Hollywood, where everyone so busy yelling about how much they love black people they've forgotten no one really likes rap music no matter who is rapping it. The film is also notable for not having any famous rappers in cameos in it. Except Eminem, of course. No Ice-T classing up "Breakin'," no Fat Boys in "The Disorderlies," not even Vanilla Ice in "Cold as Ice." Just the cold, hard truth of what happens when a white guy gets lucky and then decides to make a movie to show everyone how street he is. I loved it. I can't wait to buy the DVD and "scratch" the shit out of it on my turntable, which I will also buy at the time. |
