Fortnite is the second highest-grossing game on iOS, thanks to its in-game shop selling clothes, dances, and other fashion statements for players to make with their virtual characters.
All iOS developers are required to use Apple's payment system for in-game purchases, which means paying 30% of their in-game revenue back to Apple.
Epic decided they'd had enough of that, so over the past couple days:
1. They added another payment option that only costs them 3%.
2. They announced a permanent 20% discount for all in-game purchases, *except* the ones that still go through Apple and Google.
3. They made the discount retroactive, compensating everyone who made a purchase in the last 30 days.
4. Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store.
5. Epic immediately filed a 60 page lawsuit over Apple's App Store policy, claiming ten violations of state and federal antitrust law.
6. They also released an animated short parodying Apple's iconic "1984" ad with Fortnite characters, this time with Apple as the dystopian bureaucrats.
7. They're also directing iOS players to write to Apple for refunds on the purchases they'll soon lose access to (since blocking the weekly game updates will make it unplayable).
