The way these people managed that reform package tells us a lot about them. They built it off a corporatist model and yet largely made its funding source employers, so when it passed it ran into bad press and pushback from the entire business sector. Not having the balls to tax the richest people in the country sure failed to win them any fans among the poor people who ended up paying for the ACA in missed opportunities and the managers who saw it eat into their budgets.
Then they did shit like let the addiction and treatment provisions die a quiet death, or let it get repealed in pieces every year, or not go for a strong modern system with single payer and a medicare expansion in the first place, because they were too weak to embrace a strong populist, reformist stance that would actually deliver a hassle-free tangible benefit to the citizenry they sought to keep as constituents...except they wanted to target 'panera democrats.' So the actual experience for most of us is terrible, especially compared to other countries. This was when they had both houses and the presidency.
Let me put it to you this way. The ACA has clay feet. You have to admit that pretty openly. And I'm going to put this next part as politely as I can, but there's just no other way of saying it after the last few years of growing public awareness on the opoid epidemic (the hidden AIDS crisis of its time) and then 'rona: it is likely that your fiancé died because of, in part, a lack of good education and treatment options for light drug users, since she didn't realize she was in a much higher risk group, or didn't care, and you two tried to solve it all yourselves - which is a societal circumstance that too many of us are in because we manage our own healthcare and are told it is a form of personal responsibility despite not having any medical training instead of having healthcare workers assigned to help manage our cases; such workers exist, but there are too few of them because of the funding structure of laws like the ACA.
Hell, let's take it a step further, now that I've said that - if the ACA were a train, you'd be like a guy defending it even though it ran down a member of his family. Except that it also runs on blood, because the designers were all power-hungry vampire dicks out to sate their need to extend their careers by giving corporate hacks the right to spec the whole subway. Given that these people destroyed the reformist energy to their left during the primary and rejected every opportunity to promise extensions to healthcare (notably rejecting an ACA expansion by not committing to medicare for all), why are you focused on tomorrow and not on the next four years?
Anyway, let's put that behind us, I have to get back to helping a client I advocate for apply for disability, only they can't get a medical assessment right now because of insurance coverage complications with the assessing specialist that we need to get the test done being part of a ghost network that their insurance provider won't clean up or provide a single case agreement alternative for despite this insurer being a public MCO and thus theoretically answerable to its clients because of ACA regulation, so...definitely nothing to see there. Even if they've waited 90 days so far and have gotten nothing from their care management team but the equivalent of a shrug, can't work, and would likely be on the streets if it weren't for emergency 'rona provisions and it being winter. Hope that single $1400 they're promising comes through. Did you know they're getting $2k/mo in canada? And we get a single lump sum. What a time to be alive. So sorry I didn't vote for Biden this election. |
