It was 27 minutes total. There is no reason, ever, why any video game should subject the player to 27 minutes of non-interactive cutscenes. Even if Deadwood were a video game. The cutscenes in this game in general all go on for an insufferably long time, and all they do is repeat the same information over and over and over until you want to die. Vincent wakes up in the morning and feels guilty and confused about his nightmares and cheating, then he's sitting at lunch with his girlfriend and feeling guilty and confused about cheating, then he's sitting in a sushi bar with his friend feeling guilty and confused about cheating, then he's sitting on the toilet talking to his friend about feeling guilty and confused about cheating, then he's in a bar with his friends feeling guilty and confused about cheating, then the waitress comes over and joins the conversation while he feels guilty and confused about cheating. And every single one of those scenes cuts to and from an inner monologue where he narrates that he feels guilty and confused about cheating. I think I was angrier at the cutscenes in this game than I have ever gotten at every video game combined.
But it's a testament to how much I actually enjoyed the game that I played through to the end and beat it. Then restarted and raced through the first 3 chapters to see if I could get gold (I could). It can be viciously difficult, and that difficulty can be wildly uneven. I would hit a wall where I couldn't figure out how to proceed through a level, and then, once I beat it, I would coast through the next two. I restarted one level over 100 times. And just to give you an idea of how much the game has invaded my thinking, I noticed that while I'm reading the forum I'm subconsciously moving the words around like blocks to figure out a path to scale the text O_O
The other aspect of the game involves making choices to steer a love? meter toward stable commitment girlfriend Katherine or hot young blonde Catherine. I spent the whole game making sure to keep the needle in the middle because Katherine seemed kind of hot and Catherine was hot and texting me titty pics so I was trying to eat my cake and have it too, but then when I got my ending it somehow was the ending for going full-tilt all-in on hot blonde Catherine. I wasn't really upset because it turns out that cheating on my girlfriend of 8 years for a younger, hotter blonde turned me into a literal sex god, so that's pretty cool and a good life lesson, but I'm left confused as to how all of the choices actually affect the which ending you get.
Overall, I'd recommend this game on the strength of the actual game, but when the intro advises you to grab a snack it's not fucking around. Make sure you have a drink, some snacks, and an empty bladder every time you finish a chapter. |
