I think our family was screwing around with 2600 games which - love ya, Stella - all look like dogshit. Here's a few memories.
DONKEY KONG - they had this at Sullivan's Char-Broil in Greece, NY and the colors and clarity compared to what we had at home was truly mind blowing. My brother and I were not good at the game, we never made it off the first level as small children at this time.
KING'S QUEST - if I have this right, this is the next time our minds were blown. We all sort of understood that yes, Dragon's Lair was amazing, but... even as kids we knew it was a cartoon that took some inputs. It's sort of cheating, like if that Unrecord demo in the other base just let you type in quick time events. So King's Quest for the PCjr had the best graphics in my world when we got the PCjr. King's Quest also had the advantage of being able to actually play it, instead of the Beatles-like mob scenes that was there for DL.
BARD'S TALE (EGA) - Dad got sick of four color crap and brought home an EGA monitor for no special occasion other than he felt like it. This has been a guiding principle in my own electronics acquiring. We started this up, it had 16 color mode and our family was probably never happier. Just kidding.
THE PAWN (VGA) - I wrote an entire review on it, but that initial graphic is still one of the most beautiful in gaming. Blew my mind, and along with the other graphics in the game, all quite pretty, covered up the fact the game was lacking in a few areas.
I'm going to think about the 90s shortly. Please let me know yours, dear readers!
