MyHouse.WAD is the best backrooms game yet & it's not about the backrooms by blackwater 05/30/2023, 12:05pm PDT This reminds me of the "haunted PS1 demo disk" thing that some people did a while ago. Lo-fi horror with callbacks to your childhood (I mean, you did play Doom, right? right??) The concept of a "cursed doom WAD" is executed here with a lot of subtlety. The author messed with a lot of stuff to create an unsettling atmosphere: glitching the music, changing player height, messing with the messages you get when turning on cheats, etc. The author is obviously familiar with the backrooms lore, but there are other influences too, like House of Leaves (which I haven't read, sorry). Probably other stuff that went over my head. I say this is the best backrooms game because it really captures that feeling of wandering and not knowing why you're there. And the general dread. There are whole sections that don't lead anywhere, or that have nothing to do with getting the good ending. Actually I wasn't even aware that there was a good ending until I broke down and looked at a walkthrough. It's also cool that the author managed to make it unsettling even though you always have a gun. There are so many games where all the tension just disappears once you get a weapon. Definitely not the case here, at all. I think the idea that these are scenes from his life (or someone's life, at least) with emotional impact is what makes it work.
