It *sounds* like you're not using this, you crazy luddite. It's a thing of stunning beauty and should come with Windows as a standard utility right alongside Notepad. Assuming it does take care of BackWeb (no way to know until you try, unfortunately, but what the hell, it's a free download), it'll *really* get the job done. With some of the sneakier spyware programs, you can't simply expect to delete a few files and have the problem solved... indeed it sounds like your computer's still got, say, a registry entry that refers to a program that's no longer there, which at the very least is probably leading to error messages.
Be sure to get the updater program though - without it, AdAware had no idea that the x10.com ads I was getting were spyware and did nothing to stop them. Once I updated, the problem was completely wiped out. So it appears that the basic program download uses a really outdated reference file.
It didn't pick up the BackWeb thing, which has been on the comp for probably three weeks or so. Like a good girl I do a weekly scan.
Anyway NEXT.
BackWeb isn't really spyware. It's supposed to be a tech support aid, but I'm not sure if anyone actually uses it. Disabling it certainly shouldn't cause any problems. It is an inexplicable resource hog, and I've seen it cause all kinds of chaos on Win9x systems.
You're probably seeing the little nag dialog because there's still a key in your registry telling Windows to load BackWeb at boot time. It won't hurt anything, but if it annoys you, it is possible to get rid of it. The exact location of the key depends on your version of Windows; In Windows 2000 (and possibly XP) it's under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. (In 95/98/Me it's somewhere else entirely, and I can't remember where.) You could probably find it by searching the registry for BackWeb.
By the way, did you check for it in Add/Remove Programs before nuking it? I seem to remember BackWeb having a working uninstaller. |
