Something as seemingly simple as shot/reverse-shot requires persistent audio between camera cuts to smooth out the transition. Without it, the best they could do was point the camera at one guy, have him say his line in full, then point the camera at the other guy - a technique which was rarely utilized, because it would've been fucking nauseating. One of the most interesting things about watching old movies is seeing filmmaking techniques that we take for granted evolve in real time.
