The player and enemy card draws are the timer, and the rate of draw is the same at any player count. The biggest difference I can think of is that the number of objectives is the same every game, and half of them mandate a specific hero, so 2 players with 4 heroes will have fewer free or random options as more slots are taken up by the mandated quest heroes? That's all that's coming to mind. If you're looking into just 2 player thematic LotR, you might want to look into War of the Ring. It's king of the hill for perfectly themed, 1 vs 1 epic games. Would just be a matter of taking on more complex rules. I've recently found the Dized app to be great not only for their interactive tutorial walkthroughs, but those walkthroughs also give you a very clear picture of whether you'd like the game. They have War of the Ring.
