You know how you'll sometimes hear from good MS admins that they have this vague sense that equivalent *NIX admins 'sort of know their shit better' (obviously a wild generalization) or that they 'understand what's really going on underneath better'? dig is a perfect example of why this vague belief continues to exist - the commandline & standard utilities properly mastered (and I fully admit to being a complete beginner) are the most powerful tool in existence. It is impossible to seperate full knowledge of how the Internet *really* works, to a large extent, from the ability to use this tool.
Is it annoying to have to edit an httpd.conf file by hand in a program that makes MS edit.com look user-friendly? Yeah, it is. But do you learn a whole hell of a lot more by doing so than you do in your six-clicks IIS setup?

Something doesn't jive though; you make reference to *.caltrops.com resolving, but irc.caltrops.com would be a specific host on caltrops.com and would need a specific dns entry. (Right ..? For instance, ird.caltrops.com comes back with an unknown host message.) You can (and apparently do) have just caltrops.com resolving to that address but anyname.caltrops.com doesn't so Fuckface still appears to be correct.
Anyway, irc.caltrops.com is definitely resolving, although based on this message maybe not for the reason that you think. (Although my dns skeelz ain't so great so maybe I'm missing something.) |
