Okay... If you want to learn java, the first thing you need is an easy bookmark to the API. Go with Ray's books suggestions, I haven't bought a Java text in awhile (although I did like Osborne's Complete Reference Book for 1.1, and it has been updated several times since). Sun has tutorials for java on their site too, but I don't like web tutorials. Do you know how to program in general? If not, you might want a datastructures book too. Also: Java is gi-normous, it will take more than summer to learn even a moderate portion of it. Oh yeah, don't bother with the java language reference guide. Unlike K&R's C text, it is not the essential first read, and you can download the slightly outdated old ones anyway.
