We had to have dubbed that movie like three times. Of particular embarrasing note was our rendition of the theme song. I was going for a heroic, Horner-esque military march, full on 4/4 beat, while my buddy seemed to be channeling the more operatic side of Ennio Morricone. It didn't sync, nor did we stop, rewind or edit anything. With each dub the movie managed to get somehow less ridiculous until, ultimately, it just wasn't fun anymore. Other embarassing dubs: Record of Lodoss War, Dragon Ball (all Japanese from Japan back in '92 before anyone knew about it and waaaay before it was *cool*, Battle Royale/ninja high school, some kung-fu flick called the Unbeaten 28, Robot Jox and They Live.

They were absolutely terrible, artistically and intellectually, and I miss the fuck out of the days where we had nothing but time to sit around and make them.

That sounds like hours of retarded-ass fun and I envy you. The closest we get here is renaming all the moves in fighting games (sorry Fussbett!) and shouting them out during fights (Tina's "throw my ass at you" attack in DOA2H = "Overlord Buttblow") which is not nearly as impressive. If you dig on the faux VO, you might like throwing together shaggy, retarded, gleefully trashy movies with friends - usually over quicker too.

Lodoss TV or Lodoss OAV? I shamefully like the TV version, even though it's so shabby, because it has Heft of Real Heroics in a Robotech/Star Blazers kind of way.

Also re: Fist of the North Star - it's just like the manga, which is called Hokuto no Ken, and is very, very long, and full of the most unbelievable pomp and carnage. Two big, thick, juicy boners straight up.
