Anyway, back to the topic allegedly at hand - the purpose of academia is to be as divorced as possible from the murk of the "real world." It's not to say you can't enjoy a scrumdillyicious Whopper now and again, but worrying that the gum-snapping twerps in front of you in line aren't on the same planet as you shouldn't even cross your mind. We need the purebreds right where they are, unemcumbered by any of the constraints working people live with. It's not about developing a new molecule or scripting language, it's just being there, doing whatever it is you do in theoretical and literature classes. If you never write a word, never give a lecture, never publish a thing, you'll still have contributed just as much to society as, well, the kid serving you the Whopper (given he eventually won't be serving Whoppers anymore and may be the guy who figures out that the difference between an exact physics model and a pretty good simulation of one is negligable to the point of nonexistence... or something, I really don't know what the fuck I'm talking about anymore - are there any academics in the house to explain me to myself?) |
