the big list by veronica 04/04/2003, 12:17am PST
I only know the old shit, having left the scene several years ago, except I can recommend one of my old friend's bands who are current.

I don't know if you'd prefer hardcore, DC punk, LA punk, Chicago punk, Boston punk, punkabilly, drunk rock, or what have you, so I'll just recommend some of my favorites in no particular order:

Dwarves - Hardcore, stuff to piss off your parents (but who can resist "Back Seat of My Car"?)
Dead Kennedys - Probably "duh", but you gotta mention them
GBH - Good old steady punk
Vandals - Er, just get their very early stuff. They degrade quickly, but their early stuff is really great, humorous.
Bad Brains - These guys hung out in the audience with us during a show. Cool guys, great band.
Beefeater - DC punk
Big Black - The Albini
Circle Jerks - Just good old stuff.
Cramps - Punkabilly I suppose. Everyone should have some Cramps.
D.I. - Silly yet good. The lyrics will make you scratch your head at times, "these are lyrics?"
Dead Boys - Good old stuff
Dickies - A humor band
Exploited - When I saw these guys on their "just got out of jail" tour, the show ended with them inviting everyone onstage, and a fight with billy clubs ensued. The opening band was a skin band; they played "Punk's Dead You're Next", the Exploited played "Punks Not Dead"....singer from Slapshot was supposed going to show up to fight but he didn't.
Flux of Pink Indians - British hardcore, good if you can find them
Freeze - Boston punk, earlier stuff better but you can get it all on one "box set" CD.
GG Allin - This man was in my scene in NH (he's from Manchester). I was fortunately able to avoid him. He kept a girl in our scene tied up for four days. Well, she wanted to date him...
Government Issue - DC punk, good solid stuff
Jerry's Kids - Boston punk, fast
Meatmen - HOW CAN YOU BE A FAG AND NOT LIKE THE MEATMEN??? With songs like "Tooling for Anus", you have got to get them. I had to go outside during their show because it got too violent.
Minor Threat - Standard punk
Fugazi - I need to get me more of this. Everyone does.
Social Distortion - I love these guys, but get their early stuff.
Stiff Little Fingers - Old classic stuff.
SubHumAns - British political punk. Great.
U.K. Subs - British pop punk. One of them became a member of Rancid, but don't let that deter you.
Weirdos - These guys are just great.
X - Well everyone knows X, right? Not standard punk by any means, very bitter lyrics.
Anti-Heros - These guys are more skin than punk, but if you ignore some of the, uh, lyrics, the music is good.
Bruisers - Not sure if you can find them, they were my friends in the Boston scene, but they got popular there.
Donnas - Good girl punk.
Dropkick Murphys - Another one of my old friends heading this band, good Boston punk.
Flogging Molly - I'm sure you've heard of them, reminscent of the Pogues
Ducky Boys - Boston punk (can you tell by the name?)
Get Up Kids - Poppy, newer style punk
Hot Snakes - Collaboration of one guy from Rocket From the Crypt and two guys from Drive Like Jehu. Very nice, in the styles of both bands.
Jawbreaker - Oldish DC punk.
Kid Dynamite - Good stock punk
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - These guys do remakes of really old songs, with a punkish twist. Fun.
Most Secret Method - I am in love with this DC band. They're relatively new, and I highly recommend them.
Piss Drunks - Drunk rock. Ah, brings back memories of my drunken friends accidentally pissing on each other's musical equipment.
Screeching Weasel - Good Chicago humor punk. Not crazy about the band themselves, they played a show in my friend's basement, and dissed our skinhead friends, yo.
The Queers - This is the band I have seen 1000 times, because they were the center of my scene. They still travel to Europe and Japan, and around the US. Good punk in the style of the Ramones.
Groovy Ghoulies - One of my old friends, who left the Queers, is in this band. Tight, straight-up punk.

I hope you can find something in all this. I can give you just a few bands if you tell me what you like.

Oh, I can't leave out my club fire experience band: The Dead Milkmen. Another band that you can now get their entire collection on one CD.
