ya, the bushies are in it for the money. But honestly, what difference does that make to the average Iraqi? As long as GW isnt like his daddy, with GHWB's penchant for installing puppet dictators, things have a possibility of working out in their favor, eventually. With Saddam, the Taliban, etc, these people had no future.
Another facet of the for-profit arguement, is why else should the US do it? We arent the worlds police. If there is an organization that SHOULD be shouldering that burden, its the UN. And frankly, with as bad as things are in most parts of the world, the UN is truly a gutless, crap-filled institution. 'Rainbow Six' is only a fanciful dream; the real UN could never produce something that worked so effectively. Hell, the only UN actions that actually worked were the ones either the US or Australia led.
Saddam/Al-Queda- personally, I dont see how anyone could see a link there. OBL would probably have loved to destroy Saddam's government, when he was in a position to try such things. Now what I *do* think happened is that some of Saddam's weapons research may have fallen thru to El-Queso without his knowledge. As for the current situation, foreign news estimated A-Q at about 100k strong, but only 10% of those actually worth anything in terms of doing more than standing around with an AK-47 and smoking Marlburough Reds. Of that 10k, only about three to six HUNDRED made it out of Afghanistan alive. A lot of the upper eschelon is unaccounted for, but you have to account for the fact that many of them probably became a fine red mist during the bombing, or died in places where their carcass couldnt be recovered (and are thus listed as MIA with A-Q HQ). Then many of the rest are on the lamb, hiding out, or have taken up with other organizations that were hiring.
So the Iraq/A-Q link was kind of silly. I would have liked the situation better if the Bushies had just said 'hey, this guy is dangerous, so he gots to go down." But oh well, its hard to argue with success; winning ugly is still winning, and you have to admire the flair with which our armed forces worked.
Saddam and the WMD: There is no doubt he had WMDs. Hell, he has shown a willingness in the past to use the shit, has been exposed by the UN over the last ten years for having them, and officers in his organization were even recorded discussing disposing of them. All Saddam did was play the UN, and just delay for time so they could hide the stash. Im not going to go anymore into this, since your example was detailed and funny, and clearly makes the point.
US Foreign 'todo' list: If Bush doesnt bring the hammer down on North Korea, then you know its all about the oil. N Korea is JUST as bad, if not even worse, than Iraq. I mean at least Iraq had some kind of foreign trade. NK is like a fuckin sewer. Isnt something like 1/3 of their people in the military/government (same thing over there)? And their civil rights violations are supposed to be off the hook. BUT- they dont have oil like Iraq. So we will see how much Bush really cares, and how much is really bullshit.
One thing I do see as progress, however. Right now it seems there is certainly a chance for peace in the middle east; if you cant fix your own problems, then someone else is going to come in and fix them for you. You dont like it? Too fuckin bad. It may not work out that way in the long run, but it seems quiter there than it did when the UN was trying to 'help'. Enforced peace is still peace. |
