| Caltrops has been downgraded from a P3 700/192MB PC133 to a P2 400/128MB PC133 for the week.
During the next week, I'll be setting up the new, even more secure Caltrops box (with ES assisting me with DB configuration), with all the old hardware, plus an additional 5GBs HD space (and some extra RAM if I get to it, since that's our biggest bottleneck at the moment). The current box is a maze of overlapped and sometimes conflicting chroots (not only impossible to break out of, but hard enough to even get IN to) making patching a living hell and in one, thankfully trivial case, literally impossible. Once everything is complete, we'll have another brief downtime during which all apache logs, forum backups, and site content are copied over to the new machine, and after swapping my lone Intel Etherexpress Pro 10/100 card back to the new machine (it's the only non-$15 NIC I have), we'll be in much, much better shape than we have been. To say this has been an interesting lesson in site administration would be an understatement. We will also be able to add email addresses for staff - this has been promised before, but was impossible to add without significantly changing our level of security. The new machine will not be up before I've gotten secure POP3 working, and the bugs blocking my progress have since been fixed thank God. Actual shell access will remain limited to the current group of people for the time being (Ray/cp email/IM me if you REALLY think you need a non-root shell for coding). If you spot anything not working during the current week, yell about it here in Site Comments - I'm concerned the lack of RAM might fuck a couple of things up. I doubt the site will be noticeably slower, but let me know if I'm wrong. --SB |
