I don't believe that thoughts and ideas should ever be used to extort money. Goods and services, yes, but that's it. That's something tangible you can hold onto. Our current system of 'intellectual property' already has destroyed art by reducing it to a commodity. That kind of spiritual death is far worse than any kind of economic benefit our current system provides. Music? Live performance. In real life that's where many artists make the bulk of their income, even blippier ones - by entertaining the patrons of whatever establishment your music fits the mood of, you've economically adopted a service model, and you're in much better shape.

On a practical level, I'd argue that the current method of P2Ping and hoarding has played a much larger part in reducing "art to a commodity". I mean, in the past I'd sift for weeks through piles of used CDs to find some gems, and I'd play the fuck out of those CDs, and know them inside out. Now, I'm piling through album after album, and though I still appreciate the good albums I find, I have much weaker connections with the albums I have. I don't know if that's because I could devote more time to each album, or simply because I don't have an experience (searching for the album for weeks) to associate with grabbing an album online, but the result is the same.

Also, I'd argue that publishing music, books, films is just an augmented version of the same service model you describe. I mean, it's impractical for people to reach the entire possible audience they might have strictly through performance. I'm pretty sure there was some work and effort involved in producing the stuff that's recorded, and yet you refer to these only as "thoughts and ideas"? Maybe the implementation of thoughts and ideas.

I think music suffers because it's the only artform where the performed component is really separable from the recorded work -- you couldn't really perform a book or a film in the same way. Well, readings and plays were the precursors to those latter two -- maybe the argument that music is about live performance is as outdated as saying plays are live movies. Recorded music now has the same relationship to live shows (i.e. they're related, but for enjoyed in entirely different ways) so to argue that musicians should switch to a live performance service model as a way to make money is kind of missing the point of recorded music?
