A few years ago, some corporate arm of Douglas Adams (whether it was The Digital Village or h2g2 or something else, I forget) put up a web page where one could play the Hitchhiker's text game. It featured a Java applet that worked like any other generic text game interpreter, grabbing the game file from the website and starting the game from the beginning. This would've been pretty cool except that Java interpreter used on the web page wouldn't let you save or restore, not even by using cookies or anything, which made playing the game a bear. (A l33t h4x0r dude could just grab the game file itself and the interpreter of his choice, and not have to start over due to one blown line of dialog. Such is the life of people who can dig through HTML, I guess.)
That this new BBC one will save is kinda sweet. It makes spending an hour oohing and aahing at the new wireframe graphics a little easier. |

"undo" doesn't work. Modern games have spoiled me. NT by Mood: Perplexed 09/24/2004, 1:30pm PDT
"x" for "examine" doesn't work either by Ice Cream Jonsey 09/24/2004, 1:46pm PDT
Saving works, though. The older online version wouldn't do that. by Mood: Perplexed 09/24/2004, 2:06pm PDT
I've got the older text version. You can save just fine. by William H. Hayt, Jr. 09/24/2004, 6:21pm PDT

Right. If anyone wants the original, by the way, I can put it up. by William H. Hayt, Jr. 09/25/2004, 2:12am PDT
