That's actually #2 "The Drawing of the three" by Mischief Godwin 06/03/2005, 10:13pm PDT ...that starts out with him lying on the beach getting his hand bit off. The worst of the sequels. He wasn't some aging worthless coot in #1. #1 is just called "The Gunslinger." It's awesome in its sparseness. I devoured it in a single night the first time I read it. My biggest complaint about all the sequels is their utter failure to achieve that hazy mythic feel of the first. That and god dammned Oy.
