Killer 7 by FABIO 08/14/2005, 11:31pm PDT Word on the street: Intriguing insane plot, lame shallow gameplay The truth: Understatement on the first, misleading statement on the second. This game is weird. Very Weird. The weirdest parts of David Lynch movies meets John Woo meets whatever Tarantino was trying to rip off in Kill Bill. Weird as in ghosts of people you've killed talking to you in a Star Wars alien language, one of the ghosts being a severed head that you keep finding in cupboards who constantly uses asian emoticons and talks about killing his parents. I think you all can make the obvious joke there. Another ghost is an old man with hollow eye sockets who's always wearing tank tops with increasingly flamboyant text. You play a hitman with seven split personalities. Play a psycho chick sporting a bloodstained nightie and a sniper rifle whose special power is slitting her wrists and using the gushing blood to shatter supernatural barriers. If you get tired of her, switch characters by exploding into a shower of blood then reforming (Stephen Dorf Blade style) into a luchador wrestler complete with cape and dual grenade launchers. The gameplay is....not much, but it's also not the focus. It's shallow in the same way that running around with the resident evil control scheme killing monsters in Silent Hill is shallow, and also like Silent Hill it's a game you play more for the atmosphere than the gaming. The biggest downside is that there's way too much goddamn talking going on. You bump into ghosts that want to chat with you literally every minute or two. They often give helpful hints so you don't really skip them. Your helper ghost has a giant list of tutorial subjects that you pretty much have to listen to in order to figure out how to play. Going through all these subjects takes about 30 minutes. Bottom line: If you like Silent Hill (or did at one point), then definately check this out. If you don't care about plot or atmosphere in games and just want action, then this won't be for you. The entry fee for this game is being able to sit through the 30 minute tutorial dialog.
