We just have a serious outdoor testosterone culture, especially amongst the Afrikaaner population. They're a bit like your rednecks. Hunting is ingrained in their culture. Remember they are the descendants of the stupid fucks who treked across the country with nothing but ox wagons, ox wives and a sharp knife for company.

And now an amusing anecdote :

I have a friend who is a bit of a gun/knife nut. (Strangely enough is is english and was educated at a smarmy private school. Just proving that the above stereotype wasn't stereotypical, but what the fuck.).

He was bitching that his woman snored and he couldn't sleep. I have the same problem so I suggested ear plugs.

His response? He has tried it but because he sleeps with a gun on his nightstand and is absolutely insanely paranoid he is very aware of the background noisesaround his house. If he wears earplugs he can't hears anything and his brain starts manufacturing noises, including the sound of someone breathing over him...

As for our gun laws, they were pretty lax. Anyone could get a licence and the preferred method of carrying a gun is concealed. A new law has been passed that new gun owners have to write a competency test and go to a special centre where they have to prove that with a hand gun they can hit an A4 piece of paper from 5 meters or something. You also have to get written proof from 3 people (Not related) who can attest to the fact that you are mentally stable. Some people think they should be allowed to own a gun even if they have no idea how to use them, I personally think the new law is a good plan.

My friend already knows not to ask me to put in writing that I think he is mentally stable and he is respecting that request.
