It seems the "cannot locate or authenticate original disc" error is some strongarm copy protection that kicks in if you have ANY trace of alcohol 120% or daemon tools on your system (even just the registry). Disabling virtual drives will not work, you must uninstall and remove.

For what it's worth, I have no problem with people talking about where to get No-CD cracks because I use them all the time on games that I've purchased. Morrowind's lasting legacy will always be the fact that it ran like shit on everyone's system not necessarily because it required a system that didn't exist yet, but because it was running copy protection code ALL THE FUCKING TIME.

This is why the entire field is a fucking joke:

1) You try to buy the PC game the day it came out and go to EB because they will at least have it in the store, physically. After encountering a huge homo that tries to get you to buy fucking insurance on the disc the same guy tells you that since you did not "pre-order" it, he simply won't sell it to you. As far as I know, stores not selling you items they have in stock happens in no other industry on the planet.

2) You go to Best Buy and get it there.

3) You try to install it, which may or may not work thanks to winning products like the Wolf Age, the D&D-based game that would ultimately nuke your partition if you tried to uninstall it and the original hardcopy release of HL2 which would fail if CS was unselected. And this is all before the games that won't install if you have CD burning software on your PC. As someone who uses Alcohol 120% to burn images of games he made himself I realize I'm in the minority, but still appreciate the fucking arrogance of these assholes to demand that I take tools off my system that help me do real work.

4) You immediately go out and look for a patch. There's usually one there on the first day.

5) Because you're a disgusting thief who bought the game, there's no way to ensure that you're not stealing the game, so your .exe can fuck your shit up to the point where the disc has to be in the drive and various other nonsense. BTW, 100% of the people who pirated the game don't encounter any of that, so the only people affected by publisher-added security to the game are people who actually bought it.

And then the average PC game sucks anyway.
