Devil Whiskey is a game that took the Bard's Tale interface and updated it for 2004. You may hate the Bard's Tale interface, or hate seeing it in 2004, and if so this game is not for you. 1.0 was good but very difficult. Here are the things they improved in 2.0 that I noticed:
o Frequency of random encounters is down. In 1.0 it seemed like you'd get attacked every ten to fifteen seconds. I am playing it on "normal" for 2.0 and it seems like it's of actual normal difficulty. So this is a plus. You can also run away from fights you don't want with better results.
o Movement now allows for mouse input, free navigation, FPS-style turning: I think Shadows over Riva had movement like this. Anyway, you can go back to classic mode if you want, so it's up to you.
o More portrait options for your dudes. Dwarven women are brutal and ugly, just like real life, and the new portrait for the hobbit female is quite adorable. Awww! Adorable. I think it was Might & Magic 7 that had the worst portrait selection of any game I've ever played. I ended up using the same picture for two of my guys and rationalizing it as a by-product of them being twins because everyone else was very hideous. People are no longer hideous in Devil Whiskey! I put DW ahead of M&M 7 for this reason.
o They say they added more weapons and armor and stuff, but I haven't seen it yet. At least it's there.
The reviews I've read indicate that there is about 20 hours of play time, so barring disaster a full review is coming later. But I'm having a blast with it, again. Not everyone you fight is a monster, either -- there are "townies" that just don't like you, and they are as fun to slice through as real townies are/would be.
I don't know that there's a whole lot of RPGs that have been released recently that are any good (although the Qt3 guys are propping that game "Kult") but I lost five hours to Devil Whiskey late Saturday night and totally lost track of time in doing so. When a game joins you in viewing a sunrise I'm prepared to review it as positive!
