I did try the article you mention. It had no effect whatsoever, as the first step didn't let me boot.
Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
...that doesn't boot? That has to boot. You can boot from the CD-ROM without a harddrive, corrupt or not. Is it possible her BIOS isn't set to boot from the CD ROM drive first? Check that.
No, sorry. You misheard me. The first step, where you replace the windows\system32\config\*files* with their counterparts in the backup folder. I did that in the recovery console, and the result was the same as before. No boot from hard drive
*Update* Called HP tech support, they told me to run a chkdsk scan of the drive in recovery console. It came up with one or more unrecoverable errors, and the pakistani tech guy pronounced the system dead and in need of a reformat. I'll try that memtest Ray mentioned, but other than that my only hope of saving files is using a friend's laptop hard drive --->usb connector thingy. Here's hoping that works. |
