Shit, man. I have been looking for the answer to this one for years. I use PS2 controllers on my computer as well, and they just keep fucking dying. Mad Catz is not the answer - do not be swayed by their false promises and honeyed price point!
The only solution that works for me is to slowly acquire a multi-tap and four controllers and pretend that people will shortly be coming over all the time to play on your marvelous new system. PROS: Each individual controller lasts longer because it dies more slowly. CONS: Only true if you're not a big juice drinker or more likely, gin and juice drinker. Juice is kryptonite to the Dual Shock. Also, you have to buy four overpriced fucking controllers. This is very unhelpful, I realize.
Oh, I also got the warranty from EB when I bought my PS2. I took the controller it came with in a month before the first year anniversary and got a free upgrade out of it. Again, even if the previous stuff was helpful, which it wasn't, this is even less so.
