Read em both. So then perhaps you're against non-lethal weapons altogether, possibly thinking (as many do) that if the weapons are lethal, they'll be used more discriminately. Police can go back to billy clubs and shields. This isn't a bad idea, per se (and I don't really mean to put words in your mouth, here), but I think it's clear that non-lethal weapons are here to stay. So instead of shrugging and saying, "Oops, oh well", maybe our police forces can at least try for a better solution. Maybe riot cops should be elite teams like SWAT, only in their case they've had intensive study and practice with the wacky and weird non-lethal weapons they employ.
A really good sign: the phrase "less lethal" used in that article instead of the ubiquitous "non-lethal" tag.
Well no, I was just answering your question about whether cops get some kind of training that makes them act like that (with the gas and the guns and the what have you.)
That problem, like thousands of others, is not a problem best addressed by attempting to control the symptoms. It's a problem of power and heirarchy and what to do with them, and how the state operates within the constraints of human behavior and ability, and so on and so forth. You say "non lethal weapons are here to stay" and I say "where there is a monopoly on the use of force, there is a monopoly on the application of justice." And the argument quickly devolves into us violently agreeing with each other, with Damocles showing up to scavenge the battlefield and Mysterio interrupting to let us all know he's posted another story about jerking off. |
