Ancient Domains of Mystery
Let it not be said that the reason I hate Nethack is because of those icky ascii graphics or that I'm ignoring a simple soluton. I've just discovered ADOM and I love it.
Like Nethack, ADOM is an ascii-based rougelike. The biggest difference is that ADOM has an overworld with multiple villiages and multiple randomly-generated dungeons to explore. Plu it has a plot, a (slightly) beter interface, and gives a lot more detail about your surroundings in its little text box at the top.
It's difficult to put a finger on what makes ADOM so much better than Nethack because it has all the elements from Nethack that I hated, but here they're not irritating. If I were to hazzard a guess, I'd say it's because ADOM was made by one dude alone in the 90s who jealously protects his source code while Nethck is basically the old game "rouge" that's had innumerable cooks throwing things at random into the pot for something like 20 years.
A tourist class? Grid bugs from Tron?? Quantum Physicists??? In a tolkienesque RPG? MY MONOCLE!!!
Note that if your main goal is to come up with crazy-ass combinations of rare items in an attempt to break the game, Nethack will stand up to your onslaught while ADOM will likely crash. |
