Once long ago I moved to another city in pursuit of a job I'd been promised only for the job to fizzle at the last moment. I was stranded and I needed money FAST and the temp agencies were all putting me through that "Let him stew for 2-3 weeks to make him extra desperate for that first job." I passed by Spencer's gifts and saw a sign reading "Immediate Openings!" Better a shitty temporary minimum-wage job than hemorrhaging money while chasing empty leads. The job absolutely sucked but fortunately I snagged a decent job a week later (an old friend was the manager.)
But this isn't about me. It's about the other people working minimum-wage at that shitty store. Suprisingly, I wasn't the oldest one there, and I was the laziest (you want me to upsell the customers? Give me a commission and then we'll talk.) The super-young single mother was fucking DEDICATED to this shitty job. And there were a disturbing amount of middle aged people with kids and mortgages (the plant shut down, I don't have any transferrable skills, better several shittty minimum-wage jobs than losing the house immediately.) They decided I had "potential" and had this super-super dedicated guy come in and try to groom me to become a star salesman. The one thought going through my head was, "You do realize they're paying you the minimum they can legally get away with, right?" Not lazy people, just people who were either desperate, or had been hoodwinked by the HR propaganda.
But that was only my tiny isolated experience compared to your ongoing "Dangerous Minds" career. Or is it more like "The Substitute?" |
