Pirates stab, kick, and shoot each other. Their motives may be confusing, but the action is simple and exciting! Do not get too caught up in WHY an undead squid man/monster chooses to drive his boat out of the bottom of the sea and 'whale' on motherfuckers with his cannons. It is unimportant.

The supernatural forces did have an effect. They created a large, unmissible whirlpool which fucked up key ships. A whirlpool isn't as interesting as a big squid or large water collosus, but it gave the producers an opportunity to stage more ship to ship combat, which is only slightly less interesting than a big squid/water collosus.
