Cover story on this month's Game Informer. Some sci fi Resident Evil 4 rip off.
"The team is constantly coming up with creative ways to send a shiver down the player's spine. For instance, in one area the lights are flickering when suddenly they go out!"
Bullet time!
(side blurb on how sci-fi games are hard because if you don't design a believable 26th century coffe maker ("Do they even have coffee makers by then? O_O") then players will throw down the controller in disgust. This reminded me of a Master of Orion interview where they said the team spent a MONTH researching animal biology and evolution to come up with plausible alien races represented by icons and stats in the game, in other words so much effort concentrating on shit that doesn't matter)
(side blurb on how Alien was an influence on their sci-fi horror on a spaceship full of monsters game. Whoah!)
"We didn't go for typical 'grab a knife' combat," reveals Schofield. "We asked ourselves, 'What would you do in real life?' If you've got a weapon in your hand, you're going to swing it."
"With each weapon you have a different hand to hand animation." (but will the weapon change be real time? -Me)
"The foot stomp you'll find is pretty useful for dismembering something on the ground that's crawling on you."
"The two big mechanics we decided to focus on were kinesis and bullet time the stasis gun, because those were two awesome features in Half Life 2 and Max Payne that no one else has copied yet" (paraphrased)
"The idea with zero gravity was that we didn't want it to feel like a jetpack. So I'm jumping and shooting in that way, but if I miss - you're(?) out in space. You'll bounce if you don't land correctly. We were tempted to do a tether, but wanted to keep it as realistic as possible. (-the fuck?)
"Being science fiction fans and watching Battlestar Galactica, you know how rich and deep their background are. You want to know where these characters come from" (You'd think if they were ripping off Resident Evil 4 so closely, they could take the time to realize that giving Leon tons of backstory beyond "I'm a bad enough dude to rescue the president's daughter" probably wouldn't have made a better game)
"In fact, the story has noe grown so large that the staff maintains an internal wiki just to track the MYRIAD of fictional information created about the Dead Space universe."
"Survival horror in space, there's not too many games that have been like that."
"Kinesis lets you pick up objects in the environment and throw them at your enemies, be it oxygen tanks or saw blades"
"By chopping an arm off a slasher (one of the more common enemies in the game), you can get through an area by using the alien's body parts as a weapon".
You name me one game that lets you take weapons off your fallen foe. I'll give you a minute... Done? That's right - there aren't any!
