Ah, ok about the meme. I definitely had no idea.

This is probably it. I play by using the number pad for movement. I have 7 (Home) mapped to jump, the + key to reload, the enter key beneath the + key to crouch, and I used /, *, and - for health, use and "replay the last audio log." I never permanently remapped hack though, it was still "V." So I'd be jumping and attempt to hit "v" in mid-air, clear across the keyboard. I do think that there were some turrets that I had frozen correctly and gone in front of properly and still didn't get a chance to hack, even though I was smashing the "V" key, but there were so many better things going on in the game that I avoided hacking them by the end and just shot them out. I am willing to blame myself for this one, though, because I have a non-standard control scheme. It doesn't follow that the game would pick those isolated spots to cheat, when it seemed to be fair in all cases.

I was just kidding about the superior gamepad. :( A few of the cameras definitely had poor collision detection or whatever it is that would drive the acknowledgment of the hack button, and it took some concerted effort. The turrets, whether shocked or frozen, (but especially the former) had a window at the end of the stunned stage where they would be reactivating or something (the sounds usually tipped you off) and thus couldn't be hacked any longer. Unless you zapped/froze them again right away.

Using the chemical thrower to freeze the turrets never occurred to me, heh. For some reason I always used Winter Blast. For some reason I had it ingrained that the chemical thrower was just for people.

It's the cripple weapon of the game. Once you soup it up, you can easily take down BD's with a load of electric ammo, significantly easier if they are in a puddle. There is no substitute for its economy of force as far as freezing devices. Naturally, it took my second playthrough on hard to even give it a try. Going balls to the wall with that and a little bit of grenade launching made the final boss even more of a fucking joke than he already was on hard.

Ahhhh, OK. I can see how that would be fun when a bunch of splicers were hanging around. I seemed to always try it when there wasn't anyone in the room, so when the camera didn't turn green I was disappointed. Thanks for the heads-up.

Especially with the RPG turrets, it was crucial to get the hell out of their way within moments of hacking. Especially if there was another hostile turret within range, because the shit was about to hit the fan.

Which brings me to the reason I spent so much effort doing all that hacking: because there was nothing sweeter than walking around a level, listening to your distant cameras massacring splicers in the distance.

And now I'll make an effort to stop hyperventilating about Bioshock trivia, and go back to watching Japanese school kids metaphorically blow their brains out again and again.
